Exclamation 97 E420 ENGINE , " TICK?"

Hi Everyone !
Today, In The Heat, Of Summer In L.a., My New But Used 1997 E420, Started To Meke A Strange Ticking From What I Call The Right Side Of The Enginr ( Right Front Tailight Being Right Side , Passenger Sidse = Right Side )

It Sounds Like This < Tick - Tick - Tick - Tick . Etc

From My Experience With Us Engines And 454 Big Blocks, I Would Say I Have A Lifter Taping Or A Valve Hitting Something > Or Possible Engine Exhaust Leak At Manifold, But I Am Unsure, Car Is At The Used Car Lot I Purchased It From, Can Any One Afdvise Me A Bit, On This Issue.

As Soon As I Heard It, I Immediately Proceeded To Place Of Purchase So Their Mech Can Look At It.

Your Help Is Appreciated ! Thank You ! Mike In L.a. Oh The Tick, Does Increase With Engine Rpm, Iot Is Not Loud)

10 to 1 on of the cam oilers failed. u are gonna hve to take the valve covers off and replace those black pieces bolted in, in between the cam brackets. what happens is they come off when the car is cold cause the oil is "thicker" which will create too much pressure for the old plastic ends.

Before u go to the engine try taking off the belt and starting the engine without the belt and see if it still makes the same noise i had it in MY E430 i thoug it was the lifters but turned out to be my belt tensioner.

1997 E420
MBHustla858 is right

I have a 97 E420 that had the same problem and it turned out to be the hydraulic valve guide plastic caps. MB use to use metal ones...then got cheap and went with plastic...they will pop off and will need to be replaced.

Very common problem for this otherwise great motor (considered the last at least partially hand built MB motor) Pretty easy to fix for your shop...all labor...

Good luck!

tick

the tick the tick the tick ,,,,,,reply !

ok. here it is so far, i have spent the night at the hotel across the way from the car dealer. ... utlimately so i can manage the problem and access the mechanic directly.this morning, the valve covers on passenger side removed, he thinks it iss a hydraulic lifter stuck due to sludge buil up, mileage is 128k . the tick was not there this morning, upon cold start . they ran it about a bit, warmed it up, tick came back. they put some luckas oil stabilizer into the crank case, as an additive. ? that is not the answer i told them , lets get into the issue. am i right ? its only a bandaid i told them . bandaids come off ! not permanent.so the reply with the plastic caps for the lifters spounds right then, i'd say. i'll keep ya posted, how much is this service to repair, roughly ! https://mbworld.org/forums/newreply....e=1&p=1248312#

Tick tick tick

I had the plastic lubricating tubes replaced on my E420 2 days ago.
They are like 16.00 a piece, and my mechanic charged me about 200.00 total to pull the valve cover off, and replace the 2 tubes that had missing end plugs.

I lived with the tick tick tick for about 12 months until finally i couldn't take it anymore...

i have no words to describe the joy of no more tick.
