Etched headlamps
My '97 E420 has 49k miles on it. I bought it used. The headlamps are etched (scratched) with a fine grain etching. Does anyone have experience with this?

For God's Sake man Slow Down! The etching is from the tiny fingernails of tiny Flying Pixies that hit your headlights at high speed and they are hanging on for dear life. Millions of Pixies loss their life each year due to E-Class headlight run ins.

Etched headlamps
When I bought my 96 E320 the plastic headlamp covers were yellowed and had very fine checkered etching on them from sun damage. Aftermarket replacements were about $90 each, easy to install, and greatly improved the looks of the car.

I had a similar problem and found that using a clay bar (same as used on paint) removed 75% of my etching. I think what you feel is 75% embeded particles and 25% scratching. The clay will pull out lots of embeded particles.
There was also some discussion a while back about a plastic polishing system (used for aircraft canopy polishing) that removes both yellowing and fine scratches.
Good luck.

www.bekkers.com sells W210 lenses, but they are not listed on the website. Also, replacment lenses are affordable but not DOT approved. Not sure if they have Xenon HID type - the lenses are different for halogen and HID systems.
