Instrument Cluster - Can you change a 98 to newer style?

I was wondering if you can change an instrument cluster from a 98 to something newer, like a 99 or 00?

I have the older small led strip, would like to see the larger box style led. Any thoughts?

4 wheels
I dont think so. The newer ones had steering wheel mounted controls and other things that would not work with the older cars.

Yes, you can but it is best if you change the steering wheel and the airbag with a new clock spring behind it to the new style with the multifunction buttons on it. The problem with just swapping the instrument cluster is that there is no easy way to set the clock and get to other functions like the trip odometer without the buttons on the steering wheel. But the upgrade has been done many times before. You must be willing to do the whole job.

Nothing MB related (sorry)
It's like E-Klasse says: it can be done, but you have to go all the way. Multifunctional steering wheel AND instrument cluster. Very well doable in a 1998 W210.

Here is a link with some info regarding this subject:

There is a issue with odometer reading, You have to indicate that it is not the proper mileage, and not telling is now a federal offense. The resale value could be affected .Replacements from MB are set to the information provided by the dealer.

as long as the installer knows what he does - and has the proper tools - no problem there...odometer reading can be set to the actual value.

Thanks for the responses. Will stick with the original since it's such a large project.

how did this get a large project??? It is only a 2-3 hour job for somebody who knows what he is doing...doesn't sound that large of a project to me...

Took Steve a short time to replace & recode mine. It's only a large project if you want to retro a W220 cluster to W210
