I used to use Amsoil, and it's great oil from all of the data I've been able to dig up (that's not published by Amsoil salesmen!), but over priced IMHO..
I am using Delvac now in my CDI..

To answer the original question, yes you can use the 0W40 Mobil 1.
Prior to last year, I had been using the 5W30 and my car was running fine.
However, I did try the 15W50 and noticed a leak. Not sure if the 2 are related or not but now I have to get a new head gasket in the next few months. I noticed that the 15W50 gave poor fuel economy.
I switched to 0W40 recently and it feels better but I may just go back to using 5W30.
My advice, stick to one brand and weight.

No UOA comparisons, but I did use Mobil Delvac 1 prior to Amsoil and the Amsoil simply feels better. Not scientific to be sure , but . .

so everyone has there own oppinion on oils but which is right for me? who knows. lol so syn on a 97 E420 isn't bad? btw i have about 87k on mine.
