Hi all, I am going to buy next month a 2001 S500. I own 1997 E-420 for long time and very happy with it.
I was thinking to by 2002 E55, but my deal could not go through.
Now is the time to add W220 to my collection.
Due to my tight budget [$30000] I am going to buy 2001 S500 with about 65-75K miles on it.
The car will be of the MB lease. So I am hoping that it will be better car. Also car will be California car, so I don't need to worry about rust. I am buying car from HILINE Dealer only Auction in Riverside, California. Most of the car in this auction are lease return car.
May I get your feed back on 2001 S500. If you all can give me some feed back on any thing that I should be worry about will be greatly appreciated.
Just for outside look is it possible to update head lights to clear style like 2003. I know 2001 S500 comes with Xenon lights, but they are not clear like 2003. I know the tail light are very easy to swap to 2003 look.
Thanks again in advance for your feed back.

The 2000-2002 W220 is known to have the following problem, regardless of how owner drive the car. Worst, most happen around 60-70K, just when the warranty expire.
Airmatic: $4-5K
Instrument cluster: $1.5K
Radio (require replacement of GPS unit): $2.5K
CD-Changer: $600
Electronic ....
For upgrade:
18" AMG wheels: 1.5K
bi-xenon headlight: $1.2K
new style tail light: $350
Other than that, it's a ...good car. I would get the W210 fully load E55 for that money. More fun, more reliable. The W220 is only good from 2003 on
