Stuck in park!

Can anyone tell me why my 2000 E320 wagon would be stuck in park. My wife just called and told me she is stuck. Key turns and car starts, but she can't move shifter. Yes, her foot is on the brake. Help!

Nevermind

Apparently the shifter got locked somehow. There is a manual unlock button near the "D" that you have to depress with a ballpoint pen to unlock it.

The shifter keeps locking in park. There is no electrical malfunction being reported, Any ideas?

While I'm not 100% certain about the specifics of your model, gear selector locks are generally controlled by a couple of switches. Usually, the igniton has to be on and the brake pedal depressed. The one that usually is at fault is the brake pedal switch. On some cars, it's tied in with the brake light switch, and on some there is an independent switch. Then, of course, there is the lock itself, and the wiring in between all of these things. This is not an entirely uncommon problem, and I would imagine your M-B dealer would know exactly what to check on your specific model.

Also, I believe I have seen this discussed on this forum before, although I'm not sure of the model to which it applied. Use the search button in the forum's toolbar, and see what you can find.
