Rear Mirror remote sensor

Those who have that lousy Infraded Remote. I always wonder since my remote sucks when I am trying to unlock or lock the door. I had the battery changed, is it possible the rear view mirror sensor has gone Ka-clunk? That I may need to replace it cuz I noticed when I got the car, the plastic housing is split out slightly like it was pried open.

i have 99 E320 and it uses RF for un/lock so i have no experience with IR
configuration. I've pulled the cover from the ceiling next to the rear view
mirror and scratching my head wondering how to extend the range eg
enhancing the metal antenna somehow. but so far, no luck.

if i come up with any ideas for IR, i'll post but IR is much less flexible. i've
experimented with IR in Palm type PDA. haven't been able to duplicate the
pulse type signals off the Smartkey.

The IR sensor is in the door handle, not in the inside mirror. IR is "line of sight" and the IR beam from the remote must hit the sensor for it to work.
