I have to assume that folks getting past 130 with an E320 or E430 are 1) non US delivery cars or 2) modded to remove the 130 mph limiter. My E430 is rock solid at the limiter; it pulls strongly up to 129 and just settles down at 130 (on Bridgestone SO-3 Pole Positions).

I quote from the official Technical Data for your 2000 E430:
"Top speed (mph) 130 (electronically limited)"
For the E-Class, only the E55's are limited to 155. The original reason for this limitation was the fact that M-B was fitting the cars with tires having a speed rating "H" - 130 mph. They carried that policy forward, even though the cars with the sport package are fitted with tires rated for higher speeds.
In 2000 the following cars were limited to 130: C230, C280, E320, E430, CLK320, CLK500, S430, S500. The C43, E55, CL500, SL500, SL600 are electronically limited to 155. The SLK is not electronically limited but only does 140. The ML320 and ML430 were limited to 112. The ML55 was limited to 144.

As a westerner (California native) who moved east only a few years ago, I am familiar with open road sections where our cars can easily hit top speed. I am also aware that most jurisdictions in the West will arrest you and impound your car if you are caught exceeding 100 mph. Around 1990 it became formal CHP policy to do so. Additionally, your license is automatically suspended.
Regardless, the 130 mph limiter is pretty common knowledge amoung M-B enthusiasts. The Technical Data makes no distinction for the sport package. If there is a difference, perhaps one of the techs on the board can chime in. Most of the programmers selling ECUs disable the limiter. Most enthusiasts find it frustrating.

I went 115 MPH on my test drive with a very nervous dealer in the car. It finally stopped him from giving me the "you'll look like a rockstar in this thing" sales pitch!
I ended up buying the car 2 weeks later (97 e420)
