w210:Battery voltage variation

monitering my charging system via a digital voltmeter and comparing my results w/ the display on the climate control panel under menu item 24 (N22), I may get a reading of say, 12.9 on th eclimat control panel - while on my digital voltmeter, taking a reading @ my cigarette lighter I get closer to 14volts, like 13.76v

Why is there such a variation. I would assume that the voltage throughout the vehicle would remain consistent, but not vary that much. Anyone know?

The answer is:

The lighter = same voltage battery is seeing.

Climate Control Unit, and related system = regulated to prevent module over voltage.
