Motor mounts on E320 - Is it just me....

I did some research and thought it was gonna be a simple DIY job. I bought the mounts, put the car up on stands and FAWK. Not looking so easy:

a.) Do you need to lift the motor
b.) Does anything else need to be removed to remove/install the mounts
c.) Can I borrow somebody's teenie weenie but powerful hands and a 2" wrench to loosen the top bolt?

Am I missing something here or is it time to cave in and go to a mechanic?

Thanks

You need to jack up the motor a little.

I finished mine in less than an hour including the time to jack the car.

I posted a month or two ago with a basic description. Do a search on motor mounts.

Good luck (it is easier than it looks).

Can one tell just by looking at the mounts whether they need replaced or not? What are the signs to look for?

What about the rear mount?

Consider the motor is resting on the mounts. So definitely needs to be lifted.
Not much, but enough to ease up the weight from the mounts. Just common sense. I have once replaced mounts on a RWD Volvo.

Hope it helps.

I'm decent with the wrenches, but careful too. Don't wanna start something which results in calling a tow truck! When you see how big the mounts are, and where they go, it's like huh?

I saw your post, which is what set me in motion. I'm assuming the V8 is even bigger with less room to move around my V6 E320?

Did you start with top or bottom bolt?
Do one side at a time, or loosen, lift and do both?

Read on another board about having to remove the alternator on the pass side, AC unit on drivers?

Anything brief would be helpful.

Thanks Ala-Benz

IIRC, I removed the lower bolts first. I used a box end wrench and slightly loosened the top passenger side bolt. I jacked the engine up a couple inches and finished removing the top bolt. I put in the passenger engine mount and hand tightened the top bolt and got the bottom bolt started in several turns. Then I did the same on the drivers side and torqued down the bolts. The only issue that I remember was getting the bottom bolt holes aligned through the frame. I used the jack to raise (or lower) until they were aligned correctly.
Getting to the top bolts was straight forward on the passenger side and a little trickier on the drivers side. I remember using a socket with extension on the bottom bolts and a short angled box-end wrench on the top.

On the V8 it was pretty easy. I hope it is as easy on the V6.
Good Luck

lol

you guys amaze me. I can do anything in a caprentry shop, literally, anything as long as it involves wood.

When it comes to cars, I stand by and very politely hold the credit card.
