97 E320 Fuel Filter change- help needed

Hi All,
Changing the fuel filter is on the list for the weekend for my 97 E320.

I've never changed this myself before so I'm looking for some tutorial help here.

1. where is it? (drivers side near rear wheel well I think)
2. tools needed
3. how long should it take?
4. will the gas come spilling out when removing the old one?, if so, how to stopper the lines.

If anyone would care to offer up some advice or a step-by-step on how to get this done I'd appreciate it greatly!!!

I changed the fuel filter recently on my 1998 E320 and it took me around an hour or so. Mine was located just forward of the rear wheel on the drivers side. You have to remove a plastic cover after jacking up the rear end - I think it has around 3 screws or bolts which can be easily removed with standard hand tools. I took off one line at a time (4 total I think) and reinstalled on the new filter so as not to mix them up. I bought the smallest hose clamps I could find ahead of time at the auto parts store - you really can't reuse the ones that you take off. Some members have suggested removing the fuse that powers the fuel pump and then running the car until it dies to reduce the amount of fuel spillage. I didn't do that and on a couple of the lines I had no spillage and I had about a cup or so from another. It didn't bother me. Also, don't forget to disconnect your battery before you start and remove the gas cap to reduce the back pressure on the system. By the way, it seems that my gas mileage improved after the install.

so it looks like besides the actual filter itself, the only part I'll need will be a clamp from the auto store. Any help on the size of the clamp so I can pick one up tonight?

You need four clamps - get the smallest ones they have - the fuel lines are probably around 1/4" in diameter.
