Second harmonic balancer failure - 2001 E430, 40,500 miles
Car is a 2001 e430 with 40,500 miles.
I had the harmonic balancer replaced under warranty in November of 2003, with 23,700 miles:
112-035-13-00 Vibration AB
006-990-70-04 Screw
Questions:
1. Was the Nov 03 replacement with the updated part?
2. Has anyone experienced a failure with the updated part - in other words, had to replace their harmonic balancer twice?
3. The dealer is balking at replacing this, how do I go about escalating this issue (he's not listening when I said this is a known problem with these cars).
Thanks for all your help!
On Feb. 20th, 2003, my car had to be towed to the dealership because I could see the rubber coming out of the HB.
The service was listed under the catagory:
031280 CRANKSHAFT PULLEY WITH DAMPER, R&R
The replaced on of each:
006-990-70-04 SCREW
112-035-08-00 VIBRATION AB
112-200-09-70 TENSION ROLL
011-997-97-92 V-BELT

Seems that your balancer has a different part #:
112-035-13-00 Vibration AB
I called the dealership to find out if my part number for the HB is okay or if a newer one will be installed. I was referred to the service manager voice mail, now waiting for a call back.
Seems that your HB number is newer or at least numerically larger than mine.
