Mercedes E 220 CDI 2000
My E 220 CDI (many photos)

I'm new around here, but I know this forum since it appeared. But only has a espectator. This isn't the diesel seccion, but is the seccion for the W210 so I'll introduce myself and my car here. My name is António, I'm 25 years old and I live in Portugal.

My car is a November 2000 Mercedes E 220 CDI (in photos appears 270, but it came wrong from the dealer), wich I have bought new. It has a 2.2 lt 4 cilinders tiny engine with 143 hp and 315 Nm of torque. I will install a Lorinser power box in a few days and it will boost the power to 172 hp and the torque to 365 Nm. This engine is enought for our highways, wich are limited in speed to 120 Km/h (75 mph) but more power is always welcome. This 220 CDI engine does remarquable mpg (in this moment I'm doing 50 mpg, but out of the city I do even more than that, wich is amazing for such a big car) and reaches speeds of around 220 Km/h or 137 mph (240 Km/h or 150 mpg in a large descent). It's enought for a very small country like Portugal. It has only 46 200 miles.

It has many extras like it can be seen in the photos. I called it extras because in Portugal many of this equipment is an individual opcion. There aren't no equipment packs like in the USA. Because of that and because of our taxes, the Mercedes in Portugal are very expensive. This car cost me nearly 65 000 € in 2000, wich makes 81 500 USA dollars. The BMW's we own cost even more, so the price of the top of the line BMW 760 Li in the USA is equal or lower than the price of my diesel BMW 730d (the entry model) in Portugal. The fuel price is also much higher than in the USA, since each liter of unleaded fuel here costs 1,35 € or 1.69 $. A gallon cost's more than 6 $. The diesel is a lot more cheaper (about 1,06 € per liter) and the diesel engines a lot more economic in mpg, so 70 % of all portuguese cars runs in diesel.

But I like living here, despict all that. Hope you all like my car. I never had problems with it, only 2 small things to mention : TV tuner (without giving any problems or signs of problems, it stopped working one day but it was repaired never giving problems since) and instrument cluster (has it can be seen on the photos, some pixels are disappearing but I haven't go to the dealer to fix it yet).

Best regards from Portugal
António Peres

Antonio, welcome to the W210 forum....Nice Car and pictures.
BTW, gas prices here in the States have doulbled your sample..which was our average cost before. And we don't know how high they will get. Some xperts say maybe close to $4.00 during the summer months and maybe higher if we had bad huricanes like we did last year....

cheers!

Thumbs up

Very nice car. I'd love to have the smaller CDI engine here in the States.

Thank you all for your great comments.

The gas prices in USA are higher than I expect. Altough not so expensive as in Europe, but still very very expensive. I wonder if the gas price climb would ever stop...

Franasia and aviaator, the E 320 CDI you have on the States is much better than this smaller CDI in performances. Of course it is more expensive and consumes more. I see it in my fathers BMW's, both of them have a 3 lt in-line 6 cilinder diesel engine with 218 hp, wich is very similar to the 320 CDI from Mercedes, except the new V6 CDI wich is superior to BMW's 3 lt 218 hp diesel. In Europe, BMW released new versions of their 3 lt diesel : the one turbo version with 231 hp (called x30d) and the twin-turbo version with 272 hp (called x35d). Although it has less power in the paper (272 hp for the BMW, 224 hp to the Benz), the new V6 CDI is as fast as the BMW 272 hp engine. And how about that?

Do you know that this 2.2 lt CDI would have 170 hp and 400 Nm of torque in Europe in the W 211 after restyling? That's a lot more interesting because it consumes the same, costs the same but has much better performances. But I must confess something: if I live in the US I would have a 8 cilinders petrol Benz instead of a diesel. But with gas prices so high, I think I will regret that...

Richard / E 320, I have here another picture of the center dash of my Benz. It was taken in daylight in the same day as the night pictures I've posted before.

My car doesn't have heated seats (another thing I regret, but I ordered the car in the spring of 2000, when Portugal have very nice temperatures, so I didn't rebember the cold of the winter ) so you notice that it misses 2 buttons. It doesn't have also the electric roller blind in the rear (I've been thinking in install it), but has all the other features in the center dash.

Best regards to all
António Peres

Antonio,

I still like your car a lot. I love Diesels. The W210 was available in Diesel until MY 99, only in sedan version. Same thing now with the W211. No T model in Diesel.

What are those lights on top of the central vents on the wood trim for?

Cheers.

The diesel you have there until 1999 was the 300 TD and 300 D. That was one of the best diesel engines in the world. My girlfriend's father has a W 210 300 D (136 hp) wich he bought new in 1996 and only has 30 000 miles. That engine without a turbo is a bit slow (the 4 speed automatic gear box isn't a good help either) and consumes a lot, but is far less noisy than all CDI in the outside of the car. Fortunatelly, the E class is a very silent car in the inside The 300 Turbodiesel is very performant and very reliable and was the first diesel engine to equal a good petrol engine in performances.

In Europe. we have many low displacement diesel's and they are replacing the petrol engines in the small cars due to the fuel economy. One example is 1.4 lt diesel engine of the BMW Mini that we have. In the US you only have the petrol versions, but here we also have this tiny diesel engine made by Toyota for the Mini. It has only 75 hp (88 hp in the after-restyling Mini) but it is very a quiet engine (almost like a petrol engine) and the best os all, it does almost 60 mpg... in the city!!

The CDI are a lot more effective in fuel economy than the previous Mercedes diesel's and they can be the sollution for the high fuel prices. It's a shame MBUSA don't ever offer the CDI engines in the W 210 and don't even offer any diesel in the T Model, even in the W 211. They potencially lose clients with that. But the news tell us that Mercedes are planning to release the 320 CDI engine in the GL, ML and R class in the USA. Maybe MB will release the 220 CDI in the new C class (to be released next year)for the USA.

The lights you mention are the leds for the Parktronic (parking aid system) in the front. As I aproach an object, the leds will turn on (from the left to right in the left side and from the right to left in right side). The last two one's in each side (the center ones) are red and they turn on at the same time as a un-continuous "beep" noise. When all leds turn on, the noise becames continuous and that indicates that the object is very very close. In the rear of the car is the same thing. I'll let you 2 photos of the lights, the front ones and rear ones:

Best regards
António Peres

Nice E220CDi!

I see lots of them over here in Ireland but none as nice as yours. I'm surprised by the high spec you have - usually when I see an E220 over here you're talking cloth/ manual seats, 5 speed manual tranny and no cd player

Beautiful
