Ash Tray Lid

I have a 1996 E320, sometimes the lid for the ash tray pops open by itself. I have also noticed that it usually does it when the outside temp is around 20 plus deg C. Is there any easy fix? It seems that the lock to hold the lid is not working when you push it in to close it.

Any help will be appreciated.

Just get one off of ebay or from a salvage yard. It is not worth diagnosing the problem when the only solution is to swap it out anyway. The parts will wear down and don't work properly. With luck you will find one from a non smoker that didn't open it very much.

Thanks for the information. Can you please tell me how to remove it?

Pull up on the wood trim around the shift knob with the window switches in it at the very back where it meets the cup holder. The trim ring around the shift indicator will pop off. Lift the wood trim and move it back slightly to reveal 2 screws the hold the ash tray assembly in place. You will have to unplug the wires to the lighter from the back and remove the light for the ash tray when you remove from the dash.
