Mysterious Buzzing Noise

Hi all,

'99 E430 with 58K.

Car makes a strange buzzing noise while running. The noise changes pitch as rpm changes, so it has to be something running off the serpentine belt.

My best description of the noise is that it sounds like there is a small Cessna prop plane under my hood instead of a German V8!

I've done some research and I think it might be a failing fan clutch. Anyone else have any ideas or advice before I tear this thing apart only to find it is something else?

Thanks

check your harmonic balancer, (the bottom main pully).

I recommend to go to the dealer, if its the harmonic balancer it might fall apart and you will have to tow the car.

if its the harmonic balancer check with the dealer if its # is included in a recall of mercedes.

Balancer is good. Checked by dealer in December '05 and got a passing grade.

hmmmm.....me too.
Sounds like "blower whine" on a supercharged motor - sans the blower damnit! Is getting kind of old.

Here is my clue - I had an oil changing *incident* and oil ended up getting sloshed around the front of the motor. Not tons of oil, but enough to require a few doses of simple green.

So I am thinking it is along the serpentine belt too - not sure if it's an pulley or alternator, air compressor, or the belt itself.

My balancer is also good - it actually failed and caused $2400 in damage - which MB covered prior to the recall, and with 100K miles on the car.

I had a similar problem. I don't know if it is the same, but check it out. I had the same buzzing noise and idle and when driving. It also got louder at higher rpms. Mine was comming from the front speakers. I have a stock command system. It would come and go. I haven't heard it for months now. I hope I'm not jinxing myself
