Heating/cooling blower fan not always working

I have a 2001 4matic sedan. My heater/cooling fan does not always turn on. I am being told to replace the resister and or blower fan. Does anyone have any experience with this problem? Also, does anyone have instructions on how to get to the blower fan/resistor

Do not do anything. You rfan is fine. Depending on the weather, hwy/city driving, driving habbits, stop and o ..etc your fan may or may not kick on. As long as your Temp gauge is 83 - 89 F, you should be fine.

I live in Las Vegas NV. It is 105 here today. I found out that it is more than likely the resistor on the heater blower motor. I also found out that in 2000 they went to a newer design resistor and motor. If you do not have the new design you must replace the resistor, motor and a cover that goes with it. Luckily my car has the newer system so I can just replace the resistor. I'm not 100% sure it is the resistor and not the blower motor. So instead of replacing both I am going to replace the resistor first and see if the problem is cured. If not than I'll replace the blower motor. My Mercedes independant service center wanted to replace everything for 950.00. The resistor is 134.00 and the motor is 347.00 @ Autohaus AZ. I've had really good luck with their parts and service. I also figured out the blower motor and resistor is a piece of cake to get to. It is under the plastic cover under the glove box area. Very easy!!!

The highest the engine temp ever gets is just under 100 . It generally runs between 80-100 on the gage

Update

I changed just the resistor but the fan would not always come on. So, I installed a new fan with the original resistor and the fan blows air now. Autohaus AZ is letting me return the resistor so the repair cost 347.00. The shop wanted 950.00. It was very easy to get at to repair.
