What are big$$$ maintenance items for 97 E420 w/ 106k miles?
Assuming a 1997 E420 with 106k miles has not be neglected and abused and at least got basic oil changes & other fluids, what are big $$ items I can expect to replace in the near future? Brakes, radiator/water pump/thermostat, spark plugs/wires/caps & rotor, ..??
How long do MB auto trannies typically last?

.... nothing to brag about, it is a previous model....
BY ASC (Mercedes Dealership)
Ignition coil, plug connector (~$950?) Nope, I am not kidding, I change 3 wires and 2 plug connector for $780.
These wire and connector almost certainly needs to go!!!
Knock sensor ( $620 )
Engine Mount (~$550)
Transmission flashing w/ filter change ( $450)
Watch for the differential (could be as cheap as replacing fluid for $125, or $2000 for a new one if previous own love to run drag game)
As far as the engine.....M119 is very reliable and responsive. (specially in high speed passing)
But seriously, for a car that almost 10 years old, it is really nothing else you need to worry about.

Thanks .. but those prices are INSANE. those are Parts + Labor prices at a dealer, right?? Don't tell me those are parts alone.
Also, in terms of long-term reliability & cheaper maintenance, what's a better choice, 97 E420 w/ 106k miles, VS. 96 E320 with 70k miles?

98 E320
I have 98 E320 and am at 120K
Knock on wood, so far so good and I drive like an old man. Things that have gone south you should check:
Harmonic Balancer (exploded before recall at 110K, but they fixed it for free +-$2500)
Motor Mounts $400
Idler Pulley $40, installed myself
MAF $400
-----
In the very near future I'm gonna get the tranny flushed, change out plugs/wires/rotor; have the front end checked out.

Actually, you don't have to change them all at once.
It is ALWAYS, ALWAYS good idea to spend around $300 for the Authorized dealer to do full check up before purchasing used MB. ( Tell them you plan to buy this car, and what need to be done soon. It is really worth it )
That way, you can also have them check the record if the car might already replaced this or that..so you don't have to dump extra money later.
I would say "engine-wise" machanics going to tell you M119 has extremely reliable record!!!! Transmission-wise, all W210 are the same. ( well, mostly in the U.S. market )
No one able to tell you either 97 E420 w/ 106k miles or 96 E320 with 70k miles is better. (96 E320 still using I-6 *developed since mid 80s* engine, you can read more comment on W124 section.) I think we can provide advices or DIY thingy....but telling you which one is better over the keyboard.. I don't think it can be done.
