How to change shift knob?

The lower portion of the knob should be segmented, and if you turn that portion the knob should release. At least that's what the MB technician did, and on the old knob that appears to be what locks it to the shaft.

That is correct, and it doesn't matter which way you turn it, It's not threaded. It's just a plastic collar with locking ridges so you need to rotate the collar 90 degrees and pry it downward.
Then pull straight up on the shift knob and it should come up. Do not try to turn the knob itself, there is a flat spot on the shift rod to keep the knob from rotating. If you force it to turn you'll damage the plastic key inside the knob (should you ever want to use the old shift knob again).
If you're replacing it with a new knob keep in mind that you'll also need to purchace the stick-on emblem.
By the way sliding the new knob on isn't for the weak, it'll take a very strong hand to push a new shift knob into place.

I see some interesting burl wood knobs on ebay for around $50, then I see some nice ones on Oberclasse.com for 80-120, then the dealer's offering at like $150.

Be careful about the shade of the shift knob. I got one on ebay but it was apparently for the M class (didn't think there was a color difference) and the wood is more of a brown tone versus the deeper red tone in my E-class. It's not a huge difference.. but noticeable if you are aware.
