Question Help with Central Locking

For some reason when I use the key remote to unlock the car the indicator lights on the mirror and door blink red and green but the car is neighter locking or unlocking.

I have to enter the car manually throught the passenger door. If I put the key inside the ignition and turn it to position 2 and press on the key remote button it locks and unlocks fine, also main central locking button works when the key is inside position 2 on the ignition.

From what I am seeing, the key does transmit signal, the central locking system does work under certain condition which leads me to believe that somehow I need to program something.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Car is: E420, Year 1997

It could be also be a weak battery in the remote. You might have to resync the key with the car.
I know that these are the same symptoms that I had on my '96 s320 and I had to change the battery.

The indicators on the door and the mirror flash when I press on the button so it seems that it does transmit signal, but maybe the signal is not strong enough? How to you sync key with the car?

Unfortunately changing the battery on the remote didn't fix the problem, I guess I have to goto the dealer

I'm probably a bad one to comment on anything DIY, because I use the dealer for just about everything. However, I have discovered that the dealership is the WRONG place to buy those "cheapie" watch batteries. I found a pair at WalMart for $5.95 (icluding tax) and I think my dealer charged me 3-4 times that. Anyway, live and learn...

The Smart Key is supposed to have a battery indicator light. If it flashes red when you push any of the buttons, the batteries are good. I don't know if the color changes, or if there is no flash, if they are bad.

Since you have already tried the bad battery solution, that re-sync idea is probably the way to go. I have also been told that these keys are all "VIN specific" - for what that's worth.

Good luck,
M

I don't have my manual with me at the moment but I know that if you've changed the battery you need to do a resync. I can post more info tomorrow but you'd be better off checking your manual for the way to do it.
Good luck
