Battery is a CR 2025. (two needed)
Don't buy the battery from the dealer, they sell two for $10+. I bought 20 for the same price.

It's easy to change, you need to remove the valet key (silver key), and then you will see a small button to press (use the valet key to press it in). Then slide it open.

Here's a stupid question, if the metal valet key is used, how the heck do you start the ignition?

The metal valet key is only used to lock/unlock the glove box, trunk, the driver's door if the remote won't work and to open the remote key. The batteries are only needed for the remote. The key without batteries will work fine to start the car.

Thanks for the help....I figured the battery was going dead but I'm still having the same issue. I have to get really close to the door to arm the car. I even tried to use my spare and it's doing the same thing.

FYI -- I bought 2 Duracell DL2025 batteries to replace the VARTA (what I assume were the originals) Unfortunately they do not work, so I need to go find some other ones that may work. I figured the DL was simply a Duracell product id for their version of the 2025, but clearly there's something different about these batteries.

Make sure the batteries are making contact. I changed mine and had a bit of trouble until I figured out they were not seated in properly.

I use Duracell, but any brand will do.

Also don't forget to try the trick I leaned on this board. Hold the smart key up to your throat under your chin, open your mouth and press the key, the key will work from much farther away then normally. Of course you look like a dumb *** walking toward your car with your mouth open and the key stuck to your throat, but it does work!!!

Sadly you can't get this key for the 211, smart keys only.

Oh come on now! I've had the weak remote key issue too & all it took was a wal-mart enegizer cell battery (about $2.50) & everything works fine now! I've never heard this non-sense about sticking the key to your throat thing... give me a break!

opening the mouth has no advantages. simply touch the business end to your
chin suffices. since the locking system is RF your bone/head acts as a ground
plane/radiator for the transmitter. for those with metal key inside slid into the
Smartkey, you actually get another half doz paces distances with the key
extended and touching your jaw. i recall getting another 50' when used with
a 1/4 wave VHF/UHF antenna when i was experimenting last year. but for
weak batteries, better not to goof around and just get new cells.

Raymond is right, you do not have to have your mouth open, but as a trick with the kids it l works better with your mouth open...But it definitly works!

battery replacement for 98 & newer remote (smart key)

I know the pre 98 E class uses the 2025 battery, but what about the 98and newer with infrared remote? it's been working very radically specially locking the car on my 2000 E320. how do you change the battery and do I need to have it reporgrammed after replacing the battery? thanks

got it. pull the metal key out, then insert it on the very top (90 degrees). now you can easily pull the top of the key out (like a drawer), exposing the 2 CR2025 batteris. buy any brand and replace.

that's all I was asking. of course if I had access to the manual I would not posted the question on this forum looking for help.

i actually considered buying a printed edition off Ebay and scanning it to PDF
just to have. much easier to sort through that than the paper copy.

so......if anyone has PDF edition of 97, 98 or 99 E320/420/ out there, it
would be great if you can let me know.

Considering this head and throat thing maybe this might work too because mine is working only part time also. Heres the question?

If I hold my keyfob up to my rearend, not my cars rearend but my buttocks, my cheeks, the seat of my pants, pointing it in the general direction of the vehicle, upwind of course, and let one rip will the hot gases blown in the direction of the car help carry the radio frequency further?

OK, I know that your thinking, what in the world would standing upwind have anything to do with it? Hey, I am not a scientist, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

Don't know about the hot gasses, but if you add a 12 volt battery to the key, then stick it in your ***, you will get a hard on and not worry about un-locking the door.
