2002 E-320 Noisy roof

Whenever I hit a hard bump

or drive on a rough road the roof almost sounds like a kettle drum. Today while polishing the roof area behind the sliding moon roof (?) it went thump/thump/thump as I rubbed across it.

I'm certain others have noticed it but wonder if they just ignored it or solved the problem without rippping out the interior.

Mine does it too...yet I have been too lazy to fix it...but I think there is a mounting clip or bracket glued to the backside of the headliner that breaks loose
