Ugh i hear a pop from suspension somewhere

it happens when pulling into an inclined driveway or whenever there's a big road elevation change
i hear the pop sometimes drivers side, almost like i can feel it footwell area, sometimes pop is passenger side

could it be lower control arms? sway bar bushings? motor mounts? all?
thnx in advance

I have a 2003 Montero that does the exact same thing, starting at only 24k miles. Will be interesting to see what answers post, as I'd like to get it fixed and don't want to do the trial-and-error method.

Mercedes experience is not relevant to "Montero" (whatever that is).

A Montero, as in Mitsubishi Montero... and a suspension noise in a Mercedes can be the same or similar noise in another vehicle. It's not like Mercedes-Benz has all of it's own suspension pieces that don't correlate in any way to other vehicles... you can verify this by simply looking under a few different vehicles.

I have that same problem, but I thought it was my tire hitting the wheel well which I thought was odd since I barely lowered my car. So it's the arm bushings? How much do those cost to replace...

I just replaced mine because of a similar problem. Except when i thought it was a simple problem n part. Mercedes went and fixed my whole car, new ball joints controll arm busings, brakes all around with steel braid lines, coolent flush with royal purple put in, performance brake fluid and a 60k service. I'm getting it back tomorrow so i'll scan and put up the bill for all you guys to see.

covered by CPO, my copy doesn't show cost, labor units seems like if i read correct .8 + .8 + 2.3 would total 3.9 labor hours, i think

hmmm, maybe i'm just paranoid, but after the repair of the lower control arm bushings, the noise went from doing it most of the time on inclines, driveways, road elevation changes, speed bumps, bumps, etc. went to smooth over all those, but
on some occasions, i still hear the same noise, same feel of it, over certain driveways, inclines, it's very rare but still there
i did take it back to have it checked out, we couldn't duplicate it since most of the roads/area around dealer is flat no big inclines, so left it be.
of course now everytime it happens just reminds me its still there, even if it only happens once on a 100 mile drive for example, or 3-4 times on a 10 mile drive, it's very unpredictable, sometimes it'll do it over same driveway, sometimes it won't.
should i leave it like this for now and see if it develops into a more frequent occurance?
so far lately, upper control arms are new, lower control arm bushings new, stabilizer bar bushings look good, motor mounts look good, what else could it be? everything has been double checked as far as tightning bolts, etc. spring pads? could they be too worn? they are #3 all around it's not like running #1's if that matters.
any input much appreciated

I have been getting this gut wrenching metal to metal clunking noise when I slowly turn up to my driveway.

2 indies couldn't find the problem. finally paid $85 and MB specialist used some fancy electronic tool .... pin point to the culprit: upper control arm (driver side).

I ordered the part (only $70) and gona to attack this job this weekend.

wish me luck.

your sway bar could be making the noise. Mine started making a pop sound every once in a while after I loosened and retightened one bracket attempting to try something out last time. fail on my part. I haven't gotten a chance to fix it yet.

Yes, it is relevant as both suspensions use the same basic geometry and design. "(Whatever that is)" could be interpreted as a degrading statement and being argumentative, which I hope is not what you were trying to accomplish.

Make sure you have the chassis points lubricated as per the MB spec, check all attachment points for the suspension, Look at the coil springs seats and cups for any evidence of fatigue, shifting or rust. The coil seat or spring pads usually do not wear out. They are supported on three sides by position of metal seat and on the fourth by the spring. First suspects would be upper or lower ball joints, control rod (tie rod bushings) or anti sway bar bushings front and/ or rear depending on when you hear the noise beginning if going very slowly approaching the uneven terrain. Go to a reputable Indy for a second opinion and explain what has been done so far. Ask for his advice...
