steering wheel sound

Noticed a sound coming from inside when I turned the steering wheel a couple of days ago. Yesterday, it got worse, and I noticed a slight resistance in the turning. It did it while moving and at stop. The noise sounds exactly like when you use paper towel and windex on glass with a little pressure!!! Got in this morning, drove to work- gone for the entire ride!! Any ideas?? It was pretty audible when it occured, that is why I am concern.
thanks-

this is a common problem. There is some sort of seal within the steering column that goes bad. Take it to the dealer and see if they will fic it for you. In many instances entire steering columns have to be replaced.

I agree with star. I had this last year, took it to my indie who could not find the noise. Sure enough, when I got the car the noise was gone. Has stayed gone until about a week ago. It is back but will go away again I am sure. If someone replaced a steering column I think they got ripped off for this. The noise sounds to me like the leather is rubbing and there may be weather related expansion going on.

sound

You are exactly right, we have had some very cold weather lately (looks like most of the US has) and that is when it started. But, non-the-less, it sounds like it is within the steering column, not a "rubbing" sound, very audible/annoying- it has came back. Also, if this "weather expansion" is the cause, I cannot believe this is MB quality. Come on, my 89' CRX in college had almost 50k more miles on it, and not a squeek!
One more thing- there has been another sound, that has started since the cold has krept up, within the motor. Sounds like a loose belt, only in the morning start up,- intermediatly and disapates once warmed. ?? if this would have to do with it (steering pump??). Either way, going to get it looked at during the service B, have 92 k on her. Hope E320 Star is right!
thanks guys-

I have the same noise. My mechanic told me it was the power steering pump filter needing replacement. It's been absent (the noise) for a few weeks so I've kinda forgotten it. Gotta love MB, always something going on with the car to keep you in a slight panic.

I was told it was a seal that helps block out the outside noise and weather where the steering shaft goes through the firewall.
It doesn't suposedly require any lubrication, but once the stars align themselves properly, the thing squawks like a baby seal when you turn the wheel at low speed.
It may be contained within the steering column or around it, I don't know for sure. I know the service manager at my dealership encouraged me to forget about it instead of paying his guys to fool with it and possibly make it worse. It happens quite rarely now, so perhaps the seal slowly wears or something like that.
