MAF's are not designed to be cleaned. They are throw away consumables. The MAF is extremely delicate and cleaning is likely to destroy it. Let it alone until it fails and then replace it.

The people that told you NOT to clean it - are these the same people that want to sell you a new one.I've used it on my vehicles , I wouldn't recommend anything to anyone if I haven't tried it myself.

From another MB Forum

Removed the MAS from the intake. Then i sprayed it down using basically the entire can of carb cleaner and the entire can of brake cleaner and then a lil of the electronic cleaner. (brake and carb cleaner was like $5 total) after that I just reinstalled the MAS and turned on my car, let it idle for a bit, then took it around the block

It doesn't hurt the MAF to clean it. It is delicate but not so much that cleaning it with electric contact cleaner will damage it. Remember it is used to having air rushing over it for years! Use a cleaner that leaves no residue. Very important. You will also need a hex key with a star punch (hole in the tip) to completely remove the maf from the housing. If your maf is going bad, take it out and clean it, its going bad anyways. There's a good chance cleaning it will get another 30,000 miles out of it. Make sure and clean the wires in the tip of the MAF as well as the two at the base. Let it dry, put it back in and run your car around town for an hour. If the car starts running good, great! If not, then go buy another one. 300 bucks from dealer. The insert can be found on ebay for a hundred but buyer beware.
