W210 E320
good point fuji2112 I was kinda thinking bout the situation as well

Oliver I suggest u take more than one mechanic's opinion atleast you'll know that you won't get a huge repair bill if u decide to fix it

Guess it's not just Benz, then...maybe all German engineers have an issue with creating steering wheels. Or maybe this just happens on cars and is something you do need to learn to live with.

I asked the following question:

"Have you even tried the silicone spray solution or replacing the bearings that keep the wheel in place?"

Well? Have you had an indie mechanic look at it, and tell you that the ONLY way to solve this is to replace the steering rack? Check it out first instead of continuing to argue the point that it's extremely expensive to fix. You said yourself, "Maybe it was either live with the squeek or replace the rack"...which tells me you haven't taken your car to a mechanic yet.
I work full time in manhattan and go to school at night, so no, I have not had the time to go to a mechanic.

why you are all about defending this kind of stuff is beyond me.

I can get a rebuilt rack for $345, so if it comes down to that, I'll just replace it myself.

I cant believe you hate your w210 SO much because of some rattles n squeaks.. YOU find me another AWD car.. with a v8.. that drives like your benz. sure.. audi makes them.. the A6 is a SHI T box.. the drive and feel of our E-class' are unbeatable for the used car value. you want an ES... lil v6.. i bet youd miss your benz. and in the snow, without the AWD its ALOT different and im sure you know that.. or dont realize taht

btw.. 00 E320 4-matic. 203k. PERFECTcar. the interior is LIKE NEW.. wanna know why?.. its bc of the quality. a LEXUS with 203k is guaranteed to have a crap interior bc of the typical japanese quality. soft leather.. blah blah blah

2002 E320 4matic 92K (bought 12/20/06). 2000 E430 4matic (RIP 12/9/06) :(
Oliver - I'm not defending it, I'm just being rational. You continue to complain about something and imply it'll take a very costly repair to fix, when you haven't had a mechanic look at the car yet. Until you do, all your jumping to conclusions about how poorly the car is built and annoyance about this one little problem is completely baseless. Take it to a good mechanic and have them try to fix it. Try the silicone spray; whatever. All I'm saying is, we're not engineers so we have no idea what it takes to make a steering wheel last for hundreds of thousands of miles without squeaking - obviously, the BMW guys are having the same issues.
