How to replace climate control valve?

Ugh. I just got a call from my mechanic looking into why I'm getting cold air out of the side vents -- It appears that the climate control flapper thingy has broken, causing the flaps to get stuck. He's estimating about a 20 hour job to remove the dash, replace the part, and put everything back in again.

I'm willing to do the work myself, but I don't have any shop manuals or any special MB tools, and I'm wondering if this is something that I should attempt, or if I'm better off leaving it alone... Any thoughts?

This is painful because I just spent a good chunk of money to service the car at 100,000 miles.

Thanks,
Joseph

ouch..dunno..it does seem a bit of work..I'd check a Haynes or Chilton book and see if they have anything about removing the dash..if it looks simple and easy to understand, then maybe you can give it a try. Just hope this isn't your only car?

Wow, I'd trade it in... That's a job and 3/4, not to mention a huge mess. Maybe just close the side vents...

Thanks Lancelot! That's pretty much what I needed.

What a mess! It seems cars are put together like consumer electronics now -- everything is a sub-assembly of sub-assemblies that are nested several levels deep!!!
