A/C Compressor fried!!!

So I turn on my A/C for the first time in months (probably the first mistake) and it blows ice cold for about 15 mins and then....shake...shudder....smoke.....fried! Now it's blowing straight hot air. I have a 99 E320. Does anyone have an estimate on the cost of repairs please. Non Stealership prices please.

Did it really start smoking or are you just being dramatic?

If it quits working ~10-15 minutes after starting the car, each time you start your car, it's your evaporator temperature sensor. Price to replace varies, around $100.

Why does this happen? If the A/C drops below 32 degrees, it will likely ice up and damage the system. The evaporator temperature sensor measures how cold your A/C is and cycles the system off if the temp drops below 32 degrees. When the sensor goes bad (and therefore the temperature is unknown), the A/C computer automatically shuts the system off after ~10 minutes as a self-protective mechanism.

Were you able to get your sunroof working?

I wasn't being dramatic. I wish I was. I definitely smelled the smoke. I still smell it actually. Just not as much. I went to a mechanic yesterday and he said that's definitely what the problem is. He has to see how much it would cost but I'd still like to know for myself.

Yes i did get the sunroof working. Thanks for that! I do need to know if the roof is supposed to roll all the way back once you push the button till it clicks?

I live in Atlanta. I'll pay for shipping if you offer a good price. Lemme know. It's starting to get hot down here! I'm about to trade my car in for a W211 however but don't know if I have the heart to trade it in without fixing it because I know those guys will never notice it because it's not that hot yet. Would I be wrong? Anway, send me the price please. Thanks.
