Have a quick question. I am replacing my 420's console window/mirror switch unit. How does the gear shift knob come off and wood trim lift out so I can replace same? What kind of tools etc........
Thanks.
Jeff

dont know for sure re 97 but likely that you....
- place palm directly over knob.
- with thumb and index finger extended downwards, grab the circular collar
directly beneath the knob and twist clockwise. click. pull knob off
----------
- lower cupholder lid
- grasp wood trim edge closest to cupholder and lift up
- shift surround is seperate piece and pops up at same time
- oh...forgot i posted video on this...

Its just past 4:00 PM. I got the part installed in 10 minutes after I got home! That included cleaning the console of spilled coffee and coke from the past 10 years too. Once again, thanks for the tip. ![Thankyou](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thankyou.gif)

nothing to it- just pry the black plastic trim that surrounds the shift unit. you can probably just get a fingernail under it. then the whole wood peice also pries up - it's easiest to get your fingers under it by way of the front by the ashtray. just pull steady and slow, the clips will release. all the window switches are connected underneath the wood. they release by sliding a little brace forward. if you look at it you will figure it out. I think the mirror switch releases with just a hooking type clip. it's all very easy and requires no tools.
