Help with new shocks

Currently, I have eibach springs and #3 spacers all the way around. I left the stock shocks on to save money at the time and was planning to replace them once I got more money. I'm interested in keeping the ride smooth, what are the best shocks to do this? Bilstein?

Will these work?

Help would be appreciated and thanks

Nate, look at the KONI adjustable. It will yield a smoother, more street-friendly ride.

Aren't Koni's much more expensive? Around $500-600 compared to the Bilsteins $300-400? I only have $400 to spend anyway.

Also, currently, I feel that the Oem shocks with the eibach springs are smooth, are the bilsteins more harsh than Oem??

Also, how are H&R sport shocks?

Okay, I bought the Bilstein sport shocks for $379.99 and I will install them myself. Hopefully, the ride won't be to bad.

Nate, you're correct, the Konis are a bit more. A complete set is probably around $500. The price you got on the Bilsteins is good.

FWIW, I've just removed the Bilstein sports from my car and have installed the Konis. I've been playing around with some different combinations (H&R, Eibach, Bilstein, Koni) over the past few months. I think the KONI + Eibach is going to be the best solution for my sh|tty local roads.

I'm going to sell my H&R + Bil Sport kit.

Glad to see that you have found your solution. My roads are all newly paved, so even with my bouncy oem shocks and eibach springs, everything felt very smooth. That's why i'm thinking that I will not have any problems with these bilstein that I have bought.

The Bilstein shocks will be a bit stiffer than the OEM making them a bit more aggressive. I actually prefer them because I love the response and the handling they offer. The Koni adjustables are great because you have options but you are also paying quite a bit more. If you really want the ultimate and are willing to pay then you can go Kleeman but they're not cheap. You can't go wrong with the Bilsteins and if it was me, I would take the spring pads down from #3 to either #2 or #1, looks much sleeker IMO...

I had #2s in the rear, but it looked like the wheel well was eating the rim since i don't have a staggered setup, so i put #3s in the back. Now the wheel gap in the front and the back are exactly the same.

Also, question about installation. When I receive the bilstein springs, will they be tied together with twine? Then all i do is align them with the holes and then cut the twine? How fast will the shock shoot upwards, will that be dangerous? If they do not come already compressed, how do I compress them?

You mean Bilstein shocks right? Mine were not tied together but then again, I only installed my rear in full extension and didn't have a problem. I couldn't tell you about the front because my buddy's an MB Tech and had his boys install the front so I wouldn't have to deal with a spring compressor to install the springs as well.

I just finished installing the bilstein shocks... what a job. I'm so exhausted and I worked straight from 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm. I had no help. The car handles MUCH better, and the squeeky sound of old shocks went away. I'm very pleased with the results, but next time, i'll pay the $150-300 for someone else to do it.

hey, Nate - good job! my shock swap on 99 E320 wasn't as hard as yours for
some reason. probably model design difference and perhaps I had more room
to work with or something. I actually had fun doing it and would gladly do this
rather than job it out to someone. the $150 or so could be better spent on
other things like 3 full tanks of gas or something. taking those photos and
assigning captions took more time than swapping the fronts, no kidding. wonder
what the differences between your car and mine? but i'm sure you felt a sense
of accomplishment by doing it, didn't you? even though this one project may
not have been stress free....it's a stepping stone to others, plus, it gives you
great insight into your vehicle. just part of the learning curve.

yes, the improvement in handling is quite an eye opener, isn't it? it's not a
sports car....but it also doesn't roll much anymore.

Actually Raymond, the most annoying part was taking the wheels off LOL. The wheels were on too tight and I didn't have a tool that would give me enough leverage. So I went to pepboys and bought a steel tube to use to extend the wrench. Also, i tried using twine to hold it together, the twine just broke, any other string i had stretched to much. So, I just compressed it in my hands and moved it in myself. There is DEFINETELY a handling difference, it handles MUCH better, except that it now is more rough; it feels like a sports car. I did feel a sigh of relief when I was finished, and did feel a sense of accomplishment.

Haha Raymond. If it wasn't for you, most of the mods that are on my car wouldn't be on there today. You have been VERY helpful and I do enjoy doing them myself. It's a new experience every time and that's what matters.
