Fuel level problem...which path to take?

1999 E430

My fuel shows 1/2 tank or 1/4 tank, but I know that's wrong. When I fill up, I believe it reads full tank. Then after driving a bit and restarting the car, back down to half...1/4 tank. I've seen people say fuel sending unit, bad gauge, or fuel level sensor. Any ideas which I should start with?

Thanks guys...

You have to replace the fuel level sending unit in the tank. It is all one unit in the tank and they go bad and give the symptoms that you described. I got mine replaced for free on my 2002 when it went bad a couple of years ago.

You made it pretty long. It is almost always the sender, the replacements work fine and don't repeat.

Hi, i have a '99 E320 with the same symptoms.
Does anyone have any instructions on how to replace the fuel sending unit? Any special tools required? Location?
