Emergency/Limp Home Mode

Hey guys,

my father just came home. He told me that his car ('97 E320, bought new and fully dealer maintained since) wouldn't shift out of second gear. I think it's in emergency mode. Nothing else is wrong with the car and has been meticulously maintaind: I don't know when the last fluids were changed, but I'm sure the records are on top of that.

Is there anyway to get it out of this without resort to the dealer?

Thanks

limp mode

you can try putting in manual mode that is from parking to 4 . this should able to drive home.
or you can have in parking mode, and then try to shift out of parking mode (but not really shifting it out, if that makes sense)...and then back to to parking mode to D mode

the similar thing happened to me around 3 months. i tried both methods.. and then another time it happened when the weather was cold, i just tired the second method and everything went okay.. never had another issue agian...(i believe the board mentioned it could be the shifting solenoid.....i took my car to the mechanic and no codes lighted up)

Locked Shifter override

I had a similar problem on my 2000 E320 when I spilled coffee on the console. It would not shift out of park. There is a small window at the bottom of the letters to the left of the shifter detents. Stick a pen or pencil through this little window and the electric shifter lock will be overridden. When I arrived home I took the faceplate off and dried out things with a hair dryer. All was well after that.
