Disappointing news. Just got back from the upholstery shop and pretty much got what I anticipated. The Multi-Func buttons are simply too delicate to do anything with. I was convinced when the manager showed me how he could barely fit a business card in between the button and the airbag. Any thicker the button would be jammed inside the socket. Also there's a couple of very tight ridges that cut across the middle of the buttons and look impossible to wrap CF into. The only solution they have, and I was told they've done many in the past, is this. Wash off the top layer of the damaged surface with some kind of thinner and coat it with a new layer of enamel, but the symbols would be damaged in the process. Therefore the enamel would have to be of color in order to hide the damaged symbols. To me, that just sounds like a nicer way of saying strip then paint. I for one don't want to paint over my buttons and lose the symbols. What I am going to try is. Order new, or hunt down a set used buttons in good condition and just spray a good clearcoat on them. Obviously I'll try it on my old set first when I have a new set for backup...

There's ALWAYS a catch.
I was kinda hoping they could make a mold of the button, then make an overlay with finished edges that could simply be glued onto the face of the button instead of actually wraping the CF around the button.

Oh well... looks like I need to figure this one out on my end.
Thanks for asking anyway.

I know a CF/plastic guy, maybe he can come up with something that will help.

And somehow you feel it is perfectly alright to make such statement without a few pix attached! I NEED to see this!

I can't believe no one makes the kind of cap like you described. This is madness!

Yet.

BTW, you do realize that they can make CF in colors other than black, right?
Perhaps a silver/gray CF would fit the bill?
I've never seen brown CF, but it might make for an interesting look w/ the java.

Hmmm..... now I'm really thinking I might be on to something.

hey prov - new to this idea. but i may consider replacing mine. when they replace it for a w210, do you have to buy a whole new wheel (mounted controls and airbag and all?) or just the outside border part? if the whole wheel, from whom can you purchase it other than MB? i'd love a wood grain steering wheel...most people don't take care of the leather so on my used e320 4m, my wheel is slightly discolored and worn at 83K miles where I would have been showering that thing with leather conditioner every few weeks. how much is a new wood grain steering wheel for a w210?

***Old thread alert!***

The wheel ran me about $545, if I'm not mistaken. I put a deposit down, waited about two months, and paid the balance. It might be cheaper, but I can't remember. Just call Jerry @ formymercedes.com for the nitty-gritty.

After some major delivery problems courtesy of UPS , I now have my new MP Wheel installed, along with the Schatz walnut gear knob -

Nice clear day, clean car, what better time to take pics

The new wheel is so much better to look at and hold than the OEM wheel - I'm a happy man

E320
Hi Guys,

New to the site.

Sorry to bump a topic a few days old, however I am interested on replacing the steering wheel on my 2000 E320 as well.

I have been looking at the MP Design and they look real nice, just want to make sure it matches with the wood trimming in the car.
Losiho, what is the pat number for yours? looks real nice.

Also is the middle part and the remote control buttons included?
The buttons on mine are pretty worn out and I would like to replace them.

Thanks.

D3K,

The steering wheel buttons are part of the air bag module, which you simply re-use from your existing steering wheel - the MP steering wheel is just the wheel itself, the air bag is not included.

If your interior colour is grey ("Ash" in MB speak), you need part number SW-21088020. It's also available in Java (cream / ivory), charcoal and oyster.

Here is the link to the website - http://www.performanceproducts4benz....spx?pid=106904

The "classic style" is the same shape and dimensions as the 2000 W210 OEM wheel. The MP wheel is made in Germany, and the quality of the burlwood and leather is first rate (actually better than the OEM MB wheel IMO).

Hope that helps.....

Damn... looks so much nicer than my 97 e420 steering wheel with the integrated buttons and chrome center star. I suppose that I can't use a steering wheel like this without some hard core modding, if even then?

You can, but on pre-2000 W210s, you won't have the phone / trip computer / radio buttons on your wheel. I think 1996 - 2000 W210s have the same steering wheels as the W140 S Class (someone please confirm that ?).

Color-match was VERY close and I am happy. It took about a month to arrive and it was well worth the wait. Now, my wheel feels like my mom's CL600! Yay!
