Rear View Mirror - Red & Green light/immobilizer issue - advice please.

Hi Guys! Newb to these forums here but not an MB newb!

We have a 96/7 210 E300TD saloon, it was stood for a few months and the battery went flat, whan I went to fire it up I had to use a booster & an aditional vehicle with jump leads to fire it, it went OK, then I charged it and all was tickety boo! We used it for maybe 2 weeks without a problem.

However, we locked it up and went away for a week, upon return, it refused to start, only cranking. After checking all the obvious things (including fitting new keyfob batteries) I got a pal who works at the local MB dealer to take a quick peek, he proclaimed the red light on the mirror was not working and thus being a well known problem, it affects the alarm, it needs a new rear view mirror he said.

As a shortcut, which he says often works, he disconnected the central locking pump?!?!?! (under rear seat) we had a cup of tea, he re-connected it and presto! The car started again and again! Off he went slapping himself on the back. However, 30 mins later, the car refused to start again!

So I disconnected the pump he did, reconnected it and the damn thing still wouldnt go! - However, today on a whim, I tried it again, and it worked!!! - But yet again, after a few tries, it didnt!

So heres the crack, the red light on the mirror does not work. (nor on the door if there is one) so the car needs a new mirror and recoding yada yada, but I gather these mirrors are very expensive but the MB guy said that when there was a spate of these things going wrong a few years ago, and the mirrors were backordered from MB Germany, a clever dude in the workshop found that the LED and diode that goes faulty can be got for pennies from Maplin (maybe Radio shack in the US?) and soldered in.

Does anyone know a part number for these bits or where they can be sourced?

Can anyone confirm the tale re the central locking pump -v- the mirror lights and why the car would work intermittently?

Can anyone guide me to a resource that would allow me to repair this mirror and tell me how to recode it if I get a used one and fit that instead?

Any help appreciated guys!
