I too changed from the eggs to an aftermarket, non OEM tail light set. I too bent the contacts out.....and it worked, but not anymore. I keep getting the lamp failure message....guess they just get fatigued after a while.
Screwing around with the socket, I managed to short it out and set off allkinds of fun stuff, the BAS Warning, knocked out my passenger marker and city lights - turns out it snapped one of the 7.5 amp fuses ever so slightly, almost escaped my eye.
The aftermarket lights look nice - but DAYUM, the circuit boards on the rear are just junk.
I'll try the bead of solder trick.

I need to try the solder idea. So you guys soldered extra metal onto the bulb connector prongs to make them longer, right? I assume this allows you to twist off the connector housing in the future in order to replace bulbs as needed?
