98 E55 metallicy click Thump/bonk Underneath,any Ideas

64k Car,noise Increases With Road Speed From 5mph Upwards, seems To Be Coming From Mid To Rear Of Car Underneath, did A Test Removed Both Rear Wheels And Calipers And Run In Drive On Stand, somthing Seemed To Be Intermittantly Grapping At The Drive Train But This Has Since Stopped, but In Drive Seems To Be A Lot Of Drag Holding It From Revving ,the Bonk/thump is sort of a metallic click and Very Loud And You Wouldnt Want To Go Much Above 20mph,any Help Appreciated.

hmmmm....I'm curious too! The only time I had a thumping noise/erratic clicking sound coming from the rear is when I changed my stock rims with aftermarket rims via ebay - the thumping noise was more apparent in the rear passenger side wheel - the fronts were fine; yet, the rear passenger side needed more space - at that time, i did get 5mm spacer which cured the noise problem, but, shortly thereafter, I found better rims with the correct offset through a local store. But, I'm curious to know the metallic clicking sound!

Does it sound like it's coming from the center tunnel about 3/4 of the way back?

If it's a scrapping/grinding noise and your feeling drag, what it could be is the sound deadening mat deformed and is rubbing on the propeller shaft.

Check under the middle heat shield and see if the mat has deformed.

hopefully this helps.

Thanks for the reply,i have in fact just put on a set of rims via ebay but the rears are meant to have an offset of 35 which is correct i think ,and tyres are correct 265/35/18 the noise wasnt there before i put them on and i cant see anything rubbing but i may try the fronts in place of them and see what happens.

update

Well thanks to victorylap i put on two spare wheels and guess what the noise went, phoned rim supplier and he suggested the wheel bolts were problem, tried some shorter ones and noise has gone, turns out they were about 3mm to long and were touching something inside the rear rotors, has only taken about 2 weeks to sort this out but guess it could have been a lot worse.
