Hey.....new to the forum and to the e-class. Maybe you can help...
I have had a few MB's, and currently have a 1987 190 2.3-16. Recently picked up a 97 e420. I am very impressed with the car. It has some goofy issues tho.
When the engine temp is cold (below 80 on the gauge), the car runs fine. When it heats up above 80 is when the funny stuff happens. When stopped in "drive", the car surges occasionally, and the rpms drop. This only happens when its above 80...???? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

When it's running cold, the fuel enrichment is active. (Same as choke on old cars)
When it warms up this goes off, and your poor running indicates it's then running perhaps too lean.
Look first for vacuum leaks.

Interesting
First off, thanks for the input. I have searched the forum exresively, and a few others have had the same problem....only there arent any answers on the forum...DANG. However, in doing some diagnostic stuff in my head, I figured that I would swith the transmission to "w" instead of "s". It barely surges in the "w" position....maybe it is time for a tranny flush?????

Mine has done the same thing, but not all the time. I figured it was a quick miss in the firing, fuel injector, weak plug, or maybe a coil skipping a beat. In the past when mine did this on a regular basis one of the coil packs died soon after. This has happened three time in the past 8 months to me. I've been almost 3 months now since a coil died and my 420 only misses at a light maybe every few days and its over quick. Most people dont even feel it, but I do. Boy, I hope I didnt just jinx myself.
Just my $.02 worth............
