'97 E420 Transmission problems???

'97 E420 Transmission problems???
Has anyone had Transmission problems with there '97 E420 or heard of any stories? My sisters car is a '97 E420 with right around 57,000 miles on it. Our dealership is saying the whole trans needs to be replaced. Has anyone had any experiences with this car and trans?

Has The Trans Fluid been Changed? 30k 60k?
The Above car Does NOT have Life Time Fluid
I Would Call and Complain to MBUSA re the Trans Problems To Them The Trans SHOULD last more Than 57k Since the Warranty is Good Til 50k Or is that how they markit the trans?
They should pick up the tab or split it..But I Would Be firm re the Trans Not lasting more than 57k

Thank you Mark, ill have to look at some of the service things. The car has been serviced at the appropriate times so I have no clue, also its been Mercedes Benz Dealers for all the services. Well Thanks for the help.
