problem with smartkey

i own a 1998 290TDT and have an issue with one of my keys. I can't lock and unlock it remotely. have tried with brand new batteries, so that is not the problem. i can start the car with it, but it takes a second or two longer for the ignitionlock to accept this key than the one I use daily.
is there anything I can do with it or is it dead? the local MB shop (which is one of the most crappy shops I know of) doesn't have a clue. one said reprogram it, the other says it's not possible to reprogram it, the third have no idea.
if i unlock the car with the regular old style key, the alarm goes off when i enter the car so it can't be used as a spare key... and a spare key may come in handy one ugly day...
one alternative is to buy a new key, but I think a new one here in norway costs $350-400US, and that much money for a person like me. net income ~$1200-1300US/month

A little late, but I have read on here that these keys just go bad after some time and cannot be repaired once they get to that point. You might try cleaning the IR window on the narrow end of your old key too.
Glad you found a chrome key that will work. I bought one too and really like it. That is about what they are going for is the US right now too.
