AC high pitched, whistling noise on e320
Just noticed the irritating whirling AC noise on a 99 e320 4matic wagon when on normal auto mode. However, when i press the 'recirc' button, the noise disappears. Any advice as to what may be causing it and how to fix wd be great for a newbie.
PS-car was in for 'B' service which included changing cabin filters.

I do not understand what you are describing as "whirling" but here goes:
When I started my car on a cold morning, something started screeching and lasted for a few seconds; it seemed to emanate from the center climate control vents on the dashboard.
I was on my way to my dealer at the time and asked that they check it out. There were no error codes stored and they could not duplicate the problem. If I were to hazard a guess, I think it was a fan motor acting up, but it has never happened again.

Something to think about...
when you car is in normal A/C mode, the blower is pulling air in thru the cabin filters from the outside. When in re-circulate mode, it would just be pushing around air already inside the car. I don't think the cabin filters would come into play. I would ask the dealer to re-check the installation of the cabin filters. Does the volume of the noise change as you vary the speed of the fan? If so, that's more evidence that it could be the air filters.

that whistling, whirling sound only is apparent when the fan is on high and i only noticed it after the cabin filters were replaced. i took it back to the shop but as was bound to happen, the noise wasn't there when i took it back.
husk--are you serious about the compressor about to fail?

If that is the case, I hope you have some sort of warranty coverage because the quote I was given to replace my leaking compressor on my last 1998 E430 was pretty expensive. So expensive in fact that I traded it at a substantial loss for what I have now.

'97 E320
I just got my '97 E320 back yesterday from the stealership for non-working A/C. Quote to do compressor and drier (compressor has a slow leak) was $1621.00 (USD)...just for reference.
