Gas odor not gas cap
'97 E-320. Read other posts about gas odor inside car and trunk. I am on third new gas cap. Very hard to take gas cap off and put back on. Fuel leaks out at neck with old gas cap and all three new gas caps.
Could there be something wrong with the gas cap locking track at the opening of the neck?
Former MB dealer mechanic now has own shop said I need to replace the entire fuel tank. Seems to me it could be a number of things wrong.
Open for suggestions.

I would trust the former MB technician, unless of course, you have some reason to believe that he is recommending work that is not necessary. If you do not trust him, ask him for a few references and call them.
