Need Explanation About Shifting

What really is rev. matched downshifting/upshifting. I believe the idea is to match the engine rev with the tranny rev when shifting but I don't quite get how to do it and what the advantages are, besides extremely smooth shifts. Thanks.

Really more of a manual transmission thing -- doesn't apply to automatic transmissions.

Before the days of sychronized gearboxes, you did something called "double-declutching" primarily to downshift. Yes, it matched the revs of the engine and the tranny.

Two reasons: (1) -- and you mentioned this already -- smoother shifts; (2) less wear-and-tear on the tranny.

HTH...
