Question California Extended Warranty

I just picked up my 99 E320 yesterday. Took the "long" way around to get home and thoroughly enjoyed the 140-mile drive. I am surprised at how quick the car is.

Just called Mercedes Benz and registered myself as the new owner and I was informed that the Factory Warranty expires in July 2003.

Anyway, the dealer (not a MB dealer) has given me a week to decide whether to get the extended warranty or not. He said it'll be a minimum of $1200 for and extra 48 months 48K miles on top of the 20K that the car has now. The deductable is $100 and there is a yearly cap. He said the warranty will be transferable.

Questions:
1. Does anyone have experience with these 3rd party warranties?
2. Do you think it's worth the money?
3. Is there a preferred provider that sells this warranty in California?
4. What would be a fair price for a full coverage for a 99 E320 with 20K Miles?

Thanks,
TJ

i am in virginia, imo you should purschase as much coverage as possible,,nothing is cheap or inexpensive to fix.
1200.00 seems reasonable,,,here coverage goes for 2-3 x's that.

I'm looking into that issue myself and my MB Dealer quoted me $2532 for 5yr/100k miles activated upon signing date (not after 4yr/50k warranty expires). This is the company they recommended dealing with for 3rd party warranties. The company is called Heritage. They said Western General (another 3rd party company) is overpriced for the same coverage. Anyone else have any figures?

I agree that purchasing an extended warranty is a good idea. I purchased the M-B warranty at just under the 12 month mark from the original date I purchased my car new. I called four different dealers and all were quoting the suggested retail of $2550; (vehicles bought 'used' are usually charged a higher rate) two eventually offered a discount.

Bought the factory Starmark warranty for $1,250; it doesn't hurt to try and negotiate. The worse you can be told is 'hey, no discount'. I have had my car for a year and a half and it now has less than 1900 miles on it but the cost of the warranty is worth the price to have peace of mind and no huge repair expenses for seven years or 100,000 miles.

Starmark Warranty

Thank you all for the advice. It looks like I definitely should buy a warranty.

Two more questions:

1. I called 1-800-For Mercedes and asked about Starmark Warranties and I was told that since I didn't purchase my car from an MB dealer that it was not possible to purchase the certification/warranty. If I go directly to a dealer, will they tell me different?

2. I still have six months before my factory warranty runs out, should I just wait until close to expiration?

Thanks again,
TJ
