1997 E 300 ... "Tink" noise
Howdy all... Recently picked up a 97 E300 non-turbo diesel and now has 123k. At idle approx. 600rpm there is an occasional "tink" noise from the engine. When you bring up the rpm's to 1000 it becomes constant and a lot louder. After about 1500 rpm the noise dicipates off and by 2000 rpm and higher the engine sounds nice and smooth. When I was testing it out it had this noise (I am assuming that it is an injector(s) that need some TLC). I drove it back home, about 650 mile trip and in the middle of the trip at a rest stop I noticed that the noise was gone (mind you the car had been running on cruise at 70mph for quite a while). Is my assumption applicable? The gas car is rusted on the inside, showing neglect from that aspect. We have an '82 300D that had a similar "nailing" sound when it was cold, that's why I'm assuming an injector. What you guys think? BTW, on the drive home I was getting just under 34mpg, if that helps any.
Thanx in Advance, Chris
