GPS in-dash?

I was admiring somebody's Magellen (sp?) portable GPS unit, and I got to thinking...

Has anyone tackled the idea of taking out the MB phone that sits in the console between the radio and ashtray and replacing it with some sort of flip-out GPS unit? The thing I don't like about Garmin/TomTom, etc is the fact that they can easily be stolen.

Im not aware of a model that would fit well. You would also need an auxillary antenna if it were mounted there.

I use a Garmin Nuvi 350 and have the small mount for it attached to the vent. It is really quick to pop off and store in the center consol ~2 seconds. It is also nice, since when the nuvi is removed, the mount is not nearly as noticeable as a windshield mount would be. Plus it cost nothing to do as I did it with a paperclip

Yes, I've seen it done on here. There was a guy with a gold W210 E320 with it installed. I don't remember his name but I know he sold his car for an S500.
It can be done.

I just remove it and place it in the armrest storage bin. Actually I rarely use the GPS cause I know most of the streets. And the good thing to have my Tom Tom is I have 4 cars..none of which have a factory gps unit.

I thought about a mount, a clip on vent mount but decided in the end I don't like how any of them look.(also attracts thieves whether mounted or not if they see a mount or adapter cords) I sit mine (Garmin 660) in the cup holder when I need it, and as a poster in the SL 129 forum mentioned you don't need to see it, just listen to it.

I have been looking into this for some time now and so far have found two sources, both of which require no hole drilling nor use of tape. Suffice to say I cannot stand the sight of a windshield mounted GPS unit.

ProClip is a Swedish manufacturer with a unique snap on and off plastic clip available for various locations inside the vehicle. They have specific applications for our W210s:

http://www.proclipusa.com/home/home.aspx

Dashmount is from the UK and offers a good solution also:

http://shop.dashmount.co.uk/mercedes.asp

Either arrangement allows for the GPS /Phone/PDA to be removed easily when parking.

I have not pulled the trigger on either one yet but I am leaning more towards ProClip since they offer a Richter adapter for the Mio C220 which is what I have now. They also offer a lower console mount clip.

Hope it helps.

Cheers

I have a Garmin Nuvi 360 GPS which I like a lot. It comes with a black, hard plastic base (pressure sensitive adhesive on the back) which you could mount next to a glove compartment (flat spot). This is a permanent installation. When not in use, I keep my GPS and suction cup either in my house or in the middle armrest compartment. I believe that no one would know what that black thing is for if they look inside of my car

ccmbduong:

Thanks for the picture. My car has the same interior color. The Mio comes with the self adhesive mount as well. It's a very tempting spot to mount it that not many cars have. It still requires to use the windshield mount bracket which projects it too far from the dash.

I do not use the GPS that often so it's not an urgent need I have. I will still get either one of the two solutions I posted on earlier and will report.

Cheers
