Cylinder Misfire, no Spark

Good morning!

Car is 1997, E320, Inline 6

I was driving on a humid and rainy day when my check engine light came on "check engine electronics" and car started running like one cylinder wasn't firing.

I took it to Autozone to get the code reading and it said cylinder 5 misfire.

I changed spark plugs to the bosch ones with the two heads.

I changed spark plug wires to bosch.

No improvement. Cylinder 5 is still not firing.

I know it gets fuel to it because when I let it idle and removed the sparg plug it had fuel on it but no carbon deposit which is a sign of ignition.

My next guess would be ignition coil. do these go out often? if two cylinders are run off of one coil, how would only one misfire when coil is bad? do the coils have two cores for each cylinder and maybe one core (for cyl 5) went bad?

I would hate it if it is my injector. Is there a way to test that?

Any help would be appreciated.

Moving the coil pack...

Try moving the coil pack to another pair of cylinders to see if the misfire moves too.

Another common caution is to be very careful with the wires, they tend to be fragile and easily damaged.

Coil packs DO fail, so the moving test should help you isolate the problem.

Good luck,

JR

Thanks, JR. Problem solved.

I moved the coil to a different pair of cylinders and took the car to autozone, had them clear the code. Started the car and CEL came on, except this time it read misfire cylinder 3 which was the one I moved the coil to. Got a new bosch from autopartswarehouse.com for $62 shipped, installed and car runs smooth as new.

One important thing to mention: When I took the car to read codes the second time it had a random misfire code which wasn't there until I installed the Bosch Platinum +2's (with the two heads). After reading a post here I went and got NGK coppers and they work perfectly and they seem like quality stuff. My next spark plugs will be the Bosch F8DC4's which I've seen recommended here numerous times.

Thank you all.

You are lucky Bro

I had to troubleshoot for a few months until Ive found out that the soldering to the coil was damage (sometimes it connect and sometimes it doesnt) and spent alot on changing the cables, coil, plugs, flywheel sensor and labour.
