Sunroof Switch problem

Unfortunately today i used my sunroof to find that it would not close. The up, down, and back functions work, but the forward (close) does not. I have to push the up button for it to close and lift up. I was reading a prior post ( https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...ht=roof+switch ) and this seems to help a little. Can someone please confirm that what i am experiencing is in fact a broken roof belt? The reason why i am concerned is because the sunroof does close, but only when i push the up function rather then the forward.

Thanks for your time, i know my description is confusing but it is the best to my ability. If you are confused, just let me know so i can post a video for you sometime tomorrow.

I should also probably mention whenever i open it (back), it moves about 4 inches and stops, so i have to repress the button in the back direction for it to open another 4. I repete these steps untill it's open all the way and makes a weird/nasty noise.

when closed, try holding the button closed for about 5 secs. you should hear
a faint click...as an indication of a reset.

power go out on your car recently? e.g. battery outage?

'nasty noise' not a good sign. search this forum for well know sunroof problems

Ok, doing what raymond said the switch worked. I'll try checking what that noise is tomorrow.

Thanks again

sweet.... hope the noise isn't a result of the infamous cable/track ailment.

check battery fluid level, specific gravity, and charge. i'm a little concerned
that the roof would require reset out of the blue. did the car start okay and
with strong starter action/sound?

if roof required reset, did you notice anything else, such as windows, seats,
mirror, radio ?

I have the exact same issue. Can't open or close the roof unless I use the opposite function. I was going to ignore it until the weather warms up.
My battery must be about 6 years old by now, definitely doesn't crank during cold starts as it used to, so that might be related.

Nothing else was off, the car has been sitting for about a week without any driving. I always start up my car and let it warm up for a good 3 minutes, and that day i didn't notice anything unusual until i got back home and tried to close the sunroof. How do i check the battery fluid level? I don't know how old the battery is, i have owned the vehicle for about six months now.

I have had this same problem several times. My battery seems fine...i think it may be because I only drive the car a couple times a month

I also have 99 E320 with the sunroof switch problem..pushing opposite directions on the button to have it perform the functions you wanted it to do. Also, tried to reset procedure and it will do it once or twice properly then it goes bad again. Wonder what really causes this in the first place...disconecting the baterry completely when replacing the battery? Had the dealer checked the switch but they don't seem to think it is the switch...honestly I don't think they are sure themselves. Anyone know how to fix this once and for all??
