Tires

My summer set is Eagle F1 Gs-D3, with the back pair burned to nothing. Front pair is still viable.

I see a 235/45/17 pair on Ebay for only $140 shipped. The remaining tread is 4.5/10, which is actually close to my front pair. Thinking to get this pair and get through the season. What do you think?

What about other brands? I want cheap.

I have never bought GY Eagles for my Benz but I've had a couple of sets for my other cars. In my opinion, those are good tires. Also, GY now owns Dunlop and I have had success with those on another car (SP60).

rrbrenton, $140 shipped seems to high for a very used pair of tires. i would go to any used tire shop, they usually have a few different kinds to chose from in 235/45/17, they might even have the exact ones you have now. used tires with 4-6 / 10 tread usually go for $35-40, you can check them out and chose yourself the ones you want, and they will balance and mount them for you, so the total to tire+balance+mount will be no more that $50 per side.

I bought a set of Solus KR21, made by Kumbo as a gamble, as I read many good reports on the handling and rode noise, the later being the most important. They are outright better than the Michelin energy’s that were on the car. I am completely satisfied with the handling and performance as I just was on a 3800 mile trip and the rode like a dream with no rode noise. And for a tick over 100 per tire best tire I have owned on the e320. Look at them you will not be disappointed.

Good stuff. Thanks guys.

Tirona, I'll try that. Ebay used to be a good source for 7/10ths used at a good price on the GS-D3, but lately (when I need it), the pricing is high and availability very rare.

I need to replace all four tires, and have been searching around for a good set. I have seen a lot of reviews on the Yokohama Avid W4S tires. Good wet weather traction, long life, and good ride from what the reviews have indicated. I believe they are about $120/ea at tirerack.

i personally use dunlop sport maxx for summer which handle superb, and bridgestone blizzak for winter, but next time i'm buying new tires, i'm getting falkens either the 512 or the 912. from what i have heard they are pretty cheap (~ $90 / tire for 235/45/17 at discounttire with free shipping), they are quiet, handle good and last for a while.

Reviews seem to say that the 512 is better for performance and the 912 better for noise. I'm a bit concerned that a number of reviewers call out the winter traction. If I buy an all-season, I want to leave the rims on all seasons.

if it snows a lot where you live, then i would buy a pair of used blizzaks just for dec-feb, they are wonderful in snow. i got mine used 3 winters ago, and they are still good. i just mount them end of november and take them out beginning of march.
if it doesn't snow a lot and city is good about cleaning snow from streets where you live, all-season tires should be ok for year round.

Good morning! I am a new MB owner (bought my wife and little girl an e320 wagon). First thing I put on new wheels and tires swapped out the headlights and tinted the windows.

For tires, I've actually had (3) sets and have been VERY satisfied with an inexpensive South Korean brand called NEXEN N3000. They wear exceptionally well and have a great looking profile - unlike the Sumitomos which have rounded "shoulders" - I didn't like the look of the Sumitomo.

Here in Houston TIREMAX sells them $542 - 235/40/18's drive out.

That's pretty good, but a full set of Goodyear F1 all-season is $560 not including sales on Tirerack.

Actually I need 235/45/17.

I also have my own mounting and balancing equipment.
