Backlight out on Climate Control '98 E320
Hey, I just joined this fine forum and have recently purchased my "new" 1998 E320. The backligting for the A/C control panel is out. The radio works fine. The cluster works fine. But the only thing that lights up are the 2 small red "Auto" lights on either side showing the climate control is on Auto. The rest is dark when I turn my headlights on. (the LED reads fine all the time) Can I replace this bulb myself? I'm pretty handy and have taken my BMW apart at times. Any help would be great!!

A/C bulb for the backlit display
Hi,
I had the same problem with my A/C unit.
You can replace this bulb yourself if you have the A/C unit removal tool. Its just a very small bulb underneath the A/C unit when you take it out.

mercedes benz radio tool
Hi, the tool you need can be found on ebay.
goto www.ebay.com and search "mercedes benz radio removal tool"
They usually go for $10 to $20.
This will allow you to remove the A/C unit and the radio very easily.
Good luck.

The radio removal tool can be bought from the dealership for less than $5. The bulb is around $3.
Insert the two removal keys into the two horizonal slits on the lower left/right sides of the climate control. Pull on the rings of the removal tool to pull out the CC.
The bulb socket is located on the bottom of the CC. Use a screwdriver or dime to turn the bulb socket and it pops right out. Replace the bulb and depress the clips to release the removal keys. Push CC back into console. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to change out the bulb... Good Luck!

Good info! Should this also work for a 2001 E320 Sedan? The repair guy I use has told me that the climate control must be removed and "sent away" to be repaired... quoted me a price in the neighborhood of $300.

Run him out of town for his blatant fraud. Pull the unit as you would the radio...and fit the bulb yourself.

EDIT: For everyone's edification, the part number is 002 544 0294.
I found a place that has 10 of these bulbs in a pack for $16.75 shipped. I'm grabbing a pack and will update with results.
