AC and oil

Hello chaps.

I have recently had my E300 TurboDiesel in the shop for an AC recharge.
It had new gas and oil and have now discovered black oil on the floor underneath the car on the front left corner.
It is dripping quite serverely and it isnt engine oil. I am guessing the AC oil is leaking but I am not sure where to look.

is this a common problem and how do you add oil to the system? Could the guys at the shop have falied to seal it corrrectly?
Please help me where to look.
Thanks in advance!!

There is very little oil in the AC and if it were leaking you ought to be asking questions why your ac IS NO LONGER WORKING.

What color is the fluid?

Get a flashling and take a good look at your power steering pump. There is one line with a hose clamp that oftentimes leaks.

If thats not it look at the lower corner of the rad and see if any oil or trans cooler lines connection to it are leaking.

Thanks for the advice. There is a small rad, looks like an oil cooler in front of the wheel. The banjo is leaking there. It looks seized and rusted so I am reluctant to take it off as I may damage it more. Is this the engine oil cooler or the transmission oil cooler?

Once again thanks so far!

Thats going to be your oil cooler, on the left side under the headlamp.

I think those are compression type fittings. A bit touchy to mess with. Maybe try snugging up a tiny bit now or check it out the next time you do an oil change if you can live with the drip until then.

Thanks TMAllison

I decided to have a go and upon trying ot undo the nut to the cooler, the threads sheared off completely.
I should have taken some photos of what I did to fix it but I didnt so here is a description.

Mercedes wanted £270 +VAT for the cooler and £30 for the pipe.
I decided to try and repair the cooler.
1. I removed everything! Wheel arch trim, front bumper etc.
2. I removed the cooler and the broken pipe, I left the good pipe connected as I didnt want to shear that also.
3. I cleaned up and cut off any weak metal so that there was just a hole instead of a thread.
4. I then tapped the hole using 5/8 thread I think.
5. I used a brass compression fitting and screwed it into the thread I just made, dont forget the PTFE tape!!
6. I cut off the broken nut from the pipe, then welded a piece of 12mm pipe onto the end.
7. I then slotted the new pipe into the compression fitting and tightened up.
8. I put everything back together and hay presto NO LEAKS!!

Saved me a lot of money and I am so happy!!

Any thanks again for the help.
