I arrived in Boston last week to find two wires and a thin box dragging from my rear bumper. Any ideas as to what this could be?

I've tucked it back into the bumper for now.

I thought it might be an airbag sensor?

Its not an airbag sensor; thats a module up by the dash/shifter.

Anything aftermarket on your car? Telephone, Stereo?

Anything not working now?

that's the aux antenna for teleaid in case of a roll over. The primary antenna is in the shark fin on the roof. If you don't have teleaid or don't plan to activate it, just snip it. Otherwise, tape it back into the bumper. Good luck

As royboy wrote, it is your phone antenna. There are two of them situated at the both sides of your rear bumper.
It should be easy to snap back to its place.
Good luck
